Motivating Young Readers with the Series: Sally Loves...

November 2, 2016

Sally Loves...

Disclosure: I received this series for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

Sally Loves... is a lovely positive children's book series by author and illustrator Jody Mackey. Her books: Sally Loves to Swim, Sally Loves to Dance, Sally Loves Horses, and Sally Loves Coloring, Activities & Sticker Book, paint a picture of what is important to her, which includes family, friends, pets, favorite sports, and activities. Mackey was raised with the notion that with hard work, you can do anything. Her books bring that kind of confidence to children, to inspire and encourage them.

Sally Loves... books follow the adventures of a fun-loving girl named Sally who will inspire all readers by showing heart, hard work, and important lessons about following one's dreams. Mackey finds a way to illustrate the rewards of determination and the joys of friendship and family.

Sally will introduce children to her favorite activities including horseback riding, triathlon, hula dancing and more. She is active, fun, enthusiastic, and has a willingness to try new things. She may not be the fastest, or even the most competitive, but she gives these activities her all and enjoys herself along the way.

Each book is designed to inspire children, build self-esteem and encourage them to follow their dreams.

Sally Loves...

Sally Loves to Swim - Sally rides her bike to the pool every day with her brother and Mom. She also likes to run with her brother. Her Mom encourages her to particpiate in a triathlon. We love how active Sally is and how supportive her family are, even her dog little Mack.

Sally Loves to Dance - Sally loves all kinds of dancing, she even tries hula dancing. She practices every day. Sally is a hard worker! We love the added explanation of Hawaiian words!

Sally Loves Horses - Sally really loves to ride horses. We liked the Glossary at the end of the book explaining key terms related to horses and horsemanship. This one is the longest book, a really good read.

My daughter and I really enjoyed reading all these books. We love the simple, yet colorful and beautiful illustrations. We love how Sally inspires us to try new things, even when scared, encouraging kids to be brave, confident and to overcome their shyness. The fun Coloring, Activity and Sticker Book is adorable, too!. Any and all would make a perfect holiday gift.

Sally has been described as charming, active, enthusiastic, and having a certain willingness to try new, sometimes unconventional, activities. She may not have been the fastest, or the even the most competitive, but she certainly was going to give it her all and enjoy herself along the way. Sally stands out, not because of the sports or the activities she does, but because her determination is inspiring to all of us. When she nervously tells her best friend, "I think I have butterflies in my stomach," and then she wishes her “Good Luck!” and starts the race anyway, young girls everywhere can identify with Sally and imagine themselves trying new activities.
No doubt about it. Sally is a special little girl, and that's what makes her such a uniquely wonderful role model. When kids these days are glued to the TV or iPad, she gives young girls the inspiration to get up, start moving and seek out sports or activities that they love and enjoy. Sally empowers girls to make their own dreams come true and to develop an appetite for lifelong activity.

We received 2 of the Sally Loves books at no cost in exchange for an honest review:

Review

(Review by Jenni & Alexandria)

I have been lucky enough to pass on my love of books to my 5 year old daughter. Since she was a toddler we've cuddled together reading books that have taken us near and far with our imaginations and even taught a lesson or two. The "Sally Loves..." Series by Jody Mackey does not disappoint. With the Sally character, Mackey's books each teach a lesson that we can apply to our lives and help my daughter grow to be confident and strong.

My daughter and I both enjoyed two of Mackey's books in the series, "Sally Loves Horses" and "Sally Loves to Dance." Both books are illustrated beautifully and my daughter loves to point all the small details throughout the story.

"Sally Loves Horses" is about Sally learning to horseback ride. The story submerges you into the world of horseback riding and Sally following her dream of being in the rodeo. The story teaches the reader to follow your dreams and get back in the saddle even when you've fallen.

"Sally Loves to Dance" captures Sally's love of dance. Sally loves all dance styles but loves the hula the most. This book helps teach the reader to try new things and keep practicing. This was my daughter's favorite.

We both enjoyed these books and look forward to reading more of the "Sally Loves..." series.

Children's Books

Sally Loves….
by Jody Mackey

Sally Loves…. is such a great book series that portrays several messages for young girls and boys. I read these to my son and he got the message, but the characters and illustrations speak the best to girls. It is so great when you can find stories that are so simple and engaging that clearly speak to your children on their level. After reading these I would say that they are such great stories for girls of all ages and especially that 8-11 years old age group.

Sally Loves . . . to Swim! is about having the self confidence in accomplishing your goals and great for the active child who aspires to be a strong athlete. IN this story, Sally aspires to be like her older brother and her athletic Mom and she dreams of doing a triathlon. The entire family gets engaged in helping her accomplish her goal.

Sally Loves . . . to Dance! is another story that shows the importance of working hard to accomplish a dream. Her dream is to perform a luau and she accomplishes that with her friend.

Sally Loves . . . Coloring, activities & Sticker Book! is a great addition to these stories as they are packed with engaging puzzles and games that go along with the characters in the stories.

Sally Loves…. Is a great series for the child athletes or those with talents such as dance, music or other hobbies. They teach them the importance of hard work and determination while keeping the confidence that they will reach their goals if they stay positive and work together with family and friends.

Encouraging children is always a good thing. Jody Mackey does it through her writing. She is the author of the Sally Loves Series where a little girl, Sally is encouraged to be active with her family and friends. These books are great to show little ones, boys and girls alike, that getting involved and being active makes life fun and exciting.

Sally-review-2

In Sally Loves…to Swim! it is shown that Sally enjoys swimming with her brother on a swim team. She rides her bike and then she also races her brother to the pool every day during her summer vacation.

Sally, while looking around her house sees all the metals her mama earned by running, biking and swimming in triathlons. She asked her mama if she would be able to run one and her mama encourages her to do so by saying, “Honey, if you can dream it….and if you work hard at it…you can do whatever you set your mind to do.”

Sally-review-4

Sally takes her mama’s advice to heart and signs up for a triathlon. With her best friend, Cindy and her friends from her swim team, she runs, bikes and swims in her first triathlon. She not only accomplished what she set out to accomplish, she encouraged her friends to get involved as well.

Sally-review-1

In Sally Loves…to Dance! Sally is taught the ways of Hula. She and her friend, Evangelyne, take lessons in Hula from Evangelyne’s grandmother. Her grandmother is a Kuma Hula, which is Hula Teacher in Hawaiian.

Sally was unsure if she could actually learn to Hula and dance in a luau, but her mama encourages her with wonderful words of love. Evangelyne also encourages her by telling her what a good dancer she is and that she can do anything.

Sally and Evangelyne practice dancing every day and eventually they take part in a luau. Her mother, father and brother all attend the luau to support Sally. The girls dance in the luau in perfect time with each other. When it was over with, the girls hugged each other and know that without each other, they wouldn’t have had such a good time.

This story is about sharing wonderful moments with friends and being active. It is also about encouraging each other to never be afraid to live out your dreams.

Sally-review-3

The Sally Loves….series is a great series for children of all ages. These stories show children, especially young girls that no matter what, if you put your mind to something and practice real hard, anything is possible.

Check out the Sally Loves…series today and gift it to a wonderful child in your life.

Book Nook: Sally Loves....

Sally Loves....™ is a book series that I recently had the chance to review, and aims to offer positive messages to young readers. Sally, the main character in the book, loves to Swim and Dance, and is also featured in a coloring book that parallels some of the messages in the book. Sally gains confidence as she does activities she enjoys.

The books are realistic and encourage positive involvement in physical activity. Jody Mackey, author, illustrator, and founder of champyouth.com, has done a beautiful job with her illustrations and has created a fun, friendly, non-threatening way to encourage kids.

Reading is a big deal in our house. Every night I spend at least 20 minutes reading to my daughter. But I also take into consideration the type of books I am reading to her. I want the books we read together to be inspirational, fun and if possible have a lesson woven into the story. Sally Loves…. is a line of children’s books all based on Sally and her experiences. And woven into each story is a little life lesson.

Sally Loves by Jody MackeyIn Sally Loves … to Swim! we see Sally has a passion for swimming. Sally really wants to be on the swim team and she is training to accomplish this goal. We also learn about Sally’s other activities she likes to do, like riding her bike with her brother Ryan. Throughout the story we see Sally try various activities while she is getting ready to compete in a triathlon just like her mother. While Sally is good at swimming, running and riding her bike she is concerned that she will not be able to do all three for the triathlon. But Sally’s mom keeps encouraging her and saying “if you can dream it….and if you work hard at it…you can do whatever you set your mind to do.” And Sally does just that. She works hard all summer and competes in the triathlon. I really enjoyed how throughout the story we say Sally work really hard to attain her dream and how her mother encouraged her.

Sally Loves to Swim by Jody MackeyIn Sally Loves…to Dance! we learn all about Sally’s love of dancing. And she loves every form – hip hop, ballet, tap, hula and more. But when Sally’s friend invites her to learn a dance to perform at the luau she gets nervous. She really wants to wear a pretty dress, have flowers in her hair and perform with her friends but she’s afraid she won’t be very good at it. That’s where mom comes in. Again she tells Sally “Honey, if you can dream it and if you work hard at it, you can do anything you set your mind to.” And you know what? Sally does just that. She works hard and sets her mind to and performs at the luau.

Sally Loves to Dance by Jody MackeySally Loves…Coloring, Activities and Sticker Book is a wonderful companion to the Sally Loves…books. There are snip its from the stories included as coloring pages. There are also pages full of puzzles and games as well as stickers. I feel it’s just another way to show positive re enforcement for if you work hard, practice and set your mind on a goal you can do anything.

KIRKUS REVIEW

Mackey’s (Sally Loves…to Dance!, 2014, etc.) third series installment follows a young girl’s dream of riding in a rodeo.

Sally dreams of riding in the barrel races and practices her skills with her horse, Dillon, under the guidance of a horse trainer. After she has her first fall, she becomes part of the “Dusty Bottoms Club,” but the other girls at the ranch help her up and celebrate her efforts as the mark of a determined rider. Sally’s love for horses is unqualified and pure: “To her, their beauty and strength are magical.” And the girls, for whom horses are a shared and stimulating bond, form a sisterhood: “The riders at Ladysmith spend a lot of time together. They laugh and hug. They are always happy, and everyone really loves horses.” Readers will appreciate the supportive, promising advice of the horse trainer, which leads to the story’s ending: “Remember all your training. Ease into the barrels, sit hard for the turns, and then let him go.” This book invites young readers to indulge their passions for horseback riding and to learn some terms of the sport along the way; for example, footnotes define “Western style,” “trot and lope,” “curry,” and “leadline.” Charming pictures of life at Ladysmith Ranch appear on every page and direct readers through the story. They’ll also catch glimpses of butterflies, birds, a cricket, a frog, a rabbit, a mouse, and a wonderful white cat; it’s a pleasure to scan the scenes for these little creatures, as each one adds a touch of specificity and whimsy to the fairly simple presentation. Dark outlines surround bright, medium-hued watercolor-style images, which have just enough facial detail to distinguish Sally from her best friend, Cheza, whose grandmother owns the ranch. Distinctive markings contrast Dillon, the gentle and familiar horse, with Duke, a bigger, more spirited animal. The difference in the horses’ temperaments, in fact, is almost a story of its own.

A graceful, inspiring children’s book about horseback riding.

Youth Gain Confidence and a Desire for Sports with Sally Loves {Book Reviews}

Cynthia received copies of these books ($19.95 value) in exchange for this post. Any opinions expressed here are honest and her own.

sallyswim

Sally Loves… is a delightful series of books that offers simple messages of growing up happy, independent and self-confident. There’s nothing better than learning to love yourself and that’s the lesson this series subtly provides to young people.  This series teaches self-esteem as they follow the adventures of a young girl named Sally. She is energetic, determined and charming. She inspires young minds to seek out all the activities, adventures and sports they desire! This type of lesson is crucial now more than ever as our nation’s youth faces challenging times. Sally Loves… will give them a reason to put the technology away and grab the gift you can learn from, time and time again. These books provide the confidence children and teens need to conquer the challenges unique to their generation.

Sally Loves… books include:

  • Sally Loves to Swim, which inspires children to be active and have confidence ($19.95)
  • Sally Loves to Dance encourages working hard to fulfill a dream ($19.95)
  • Sally Loves Coloring, Activities, and Sticker Book engages children in fun activities, word searches, mazes and pages of reusable stickers ($12.95)

Upon receiving these books, I thought…wow, they are “a bit girlie looking” for my 6-year old “farm boy” son, as I could see they were such beautifully illustrated hardcover books.  I cracked open the first book (Sally Loves… to Swim as it seemed the less “girlie” of the two) and began to read.  My son actually enjoyed that book VERY much and the second book (Sally Loves… to Dance) and the first time around we read both through twice.  My young son’s mind could see the similarities in the two books regarding having BIG dreams and achieving goals.

sallydance

The Coloring, Activities & Sticker Book offers hours of enjoyment for youngsters with puzzles, mazes, stickers, drawings, coloring, etc.  Activities range from easy for the youngest of readers to more challenging for those older readers.  All three books would be a great summer package of fun!

The Sally Loves… series is geared for ages 4-9.  Sally Loves… are available at www.champyouth.com, Amazon and select book and specialty stores.
